Copperline runs four datacentres and targets hobbyists, agencies hosting small client sites, and anyone who wants a predictable invoice more than they want elasticity. Autoscaling is limited to manual snapshots and a basic load balancer.

Perfect for what I use it for

I run 22 client sites for a small agency. Every one is a low traffic brochure site. I pay a fixed amount, I know what it is, I bill the clients a markup and everyone's happy. Nobody needs autoscaling for a plumber's website. Would not use it for anything with real traffic though.

Calling this cloud is a stretch

It's a VPS host with a nicer dashboard. Nothing wrong with that but be clear about what you're buying. No autoscaling, no IaC, the API can't even resize a volume. If you want cloud go elsewhere, if you want cheap VMs it's fine.

The Frankfurt DC had a rough few months

Between roughly September and December I had six separate network blips in FRA, two of them over an hour. Status page was slow to acknowledge every time. It has been stable since January to be fair, and I think they replaced something, but they never really explained what. For the price I can live with it. I wouldn't put anything critical there.

Cheap, and you can tell

Disk IO on the shared plans is genuinely poor at peak times. Ran a small Postgres on one and query latency doubled every evening around 8pm. Moved the DB elsewhere and kept the web tier here. At this price I'm not going to complain too loudly but go in with expectations set.

Good value, patient support

I'm not very technical and I've had to ask some fairly basic questions. They've always been kind about it and walked me through things. Slower than I'd like — usually next business day — but never rude. Pooled bandwidth is a nice touch, one of my sites got picked up on a forum and it didn't cost me anything extra.

Calling this cloud is a stretch
